A 10-Year Journey: From Raising Awareness to Action with Just A Farmer

Reflecting on the past ten years of raising awareness about mental health, particularly within farming communities, I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the incredible people I’ve met along the way. This journey has been about learning, listening, and most importantly, sharing stories—stories that need to be told, stories that matter.

When I first began this mission, I knew the struggles faced by farmers and rural communities had to be acknowledged. Over time, I’ve witnessed something powerful—more people opening up, talking honestly about mental health, and breaking down the stigma that has kept too many from reaching out for help. Community-driven initiatives, like the Coastrek events, mental health walks, and the screenings of Just A Farmer, have been crucial in fostering these conversations. It’s through these community activities that we continue to grow stronger and show that we are not alone in our struggles.

Beyond Blue has been a pivotal partner in this journey. Their ongoing research and support services are essential in providing vital resources and ensuring that mental health support is available to all Australians. Their work continues to shine a light on the importance of mental health and how we can all contribute to making positive change in our communities.

As my journey continued, I realised I wanted to create a bigger platform for people to share their stories, start more conversations, and bring communities together. That’s when I decided to write Just A Farmer—a film that highlights the very real struggles of rural communities while showcasing the strength and resilience that exist in every farm and town.

The response to the film has been incredible. What makes this journey even more special is the way local communities across the country have come together to host community screenings. These screenings are more than just events; they’re powerful spaces where people share their experiences, seek support, and feel understood. The impact of these screenings is profound, as the conversations that are sparked within these local groups continue to create lasting change. And I couldn’t be prouder of how Just A Farmer is serving as a catalyst for these conversations.

I’m also thrilled to be an Ambassador for Coastrek Mornington, where I’ll be walking 20km on May 23rd alongside thousands of others in support of Beyond Blue. It’s an event that combines the power of nature, fitness, and fundraising, all for an incredibly important cause. I’m excited to join over 4,000 participants who are all walking together for mental health. It’s going to be a fantastic day, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity to be part of it.

As for Just A Farmer, the screenings we’re hosting across Australia are also a vital part of this journey. These events are hosted by local community groups, and their efforts are what make this all possible. I’ve seen firsthand how these screenings bring people together—how one film, one conversation, can lead to something bigger than we could have imagined. Whether it’s raising awareness, offering support, or simply connecting people who might otherwise never have met, these screenings are changing lives.

But it’s not all serious—there’s also a bit of fun in the mix!  After all, it’s not every day you get to step off the farm and out to the beach for a good walk with 4,000+ others. It’s going to be a day filled with energy, inspiration, and a lot of laughs. And I’d love for you to join me! Together, we can continue raising awareness, supporting each other, and pushing for change.

If you’re looking for ways to get involved, there are so many opportunities to support Beyond Blue — whether by donating, walking alongside us, or even hosting your own community screening of Just A Farmer. Together, we can make a difference, and I know the best is yet to come.
